Manufacturing cuts pass 4,000 jobs

Ten biopharmas have cut or plan to cut 4,062 plant roles, almost half of them at BioNTech. Teva added a Fairfield, NJ closure this week, even as Merck’s new Virginia plant could add 500+ jobs.

Deep cuts to reset strategy

LENZ is cutting about 75% of staff to focus on consumer marketing, with its CEO stepping down. Molecular Partners plans to remove up to 44% of positions as it narrows to radiopharmaceuticals.

Why it matters: Fewer companies are cutting, but the cuts that remain are about site footprint and focus, and they free up experienced people in specific places.

Where the Jobs Are

New York postings have more than doubled

Biopharma postings in New York are up 109% in a year. Regeneron has about 300 openings, and the rest lean towards MSLs, territory managers and manufacturing roles.

Map the closures before you post

Building manufacturing or quality teams? Sites winding down over the next 12–18 months are your talent map. The best operators move before the closing date, so start conversations early.

Close the loop after every interview

Silence after an interview is what candidates remember. Set a rule that every interviewed candidate hears back within a week, even if the answer is “not yet”.

Write field ads for the territory

For MSL and sales roles, name the territory, the travel and the reporting line up front. Candidates comparing several similar roles decide on the detail.

Employer Brand Spotlight

How you let people go is part of your brand

Three former Big Pharma staff told BioSpace how their exits went: one heard the news at home, one found out on LinkedIn after their Teams access failed, and one is still searching more than a year on.

Why it matters: The people you let go this year are next year’s referrers, reviewers and sometimes rehires. They remember how they were told.

QP’s Take

Cutting and hiring now sit side by side

  • Layoffs now are more about footprint and focus than survival. That puts experienced manufacturing, quality and commercial people on the market in specific places at specific times.
  • Teams that track WARN notices and site closures alongside their own hiring plans get first look at that talent.
  • For 2027 plans: Treat exits as part of your employer brand, and budget for relocation where your new sites are far from the old ones.
