Genedata, the Basel-based enterprise software company owned by Danaher, has launched a fully integrated electronic lab notebook for biopharma R&D teams. The announcement went out on 28 October 2026.
What's new
Most ELNs are separate systems where scientists write up experiments, with the results and sample records held somewhere else. Genedata's pitch is the opposite: its notebook is built into the platform where the molecules, samples, process parameters and assay results already live, so a write-up is tied to a candidate's full history from design through to formulation and analytical development.
The release lists a broad scope. Alongside the notebook itself, the product includes LIMS, sample management, registration and workflow execution, with data integrity controls built in. Requests can be routed across internal labs, central facilities, CROs and CDMOs, and the system connects to instruments, robotics and other lab and IT systems.
It is aimed at biologics first, with the release naming ADCs, bispecifics, cell and gene therapies and peptides among the modalities supported.
The AI angle
There is no separate AI feature in this launch. Instead Genedata argues that clean, connected records are what AI work needs, saying the platform gives "scientists and AI systems" consistent, traceable data across the R&D lifecycle.
"Genedata is not introducing just another ELN. We are fundamentally rethinking what an ELN should be in the age of AI" Othmar Pfannes, Ph.D., President, Genedata
No pricing, customer names or rollout timetable were given. Genedata says it has worked with biopharma customers for more than 25 years.
The bigger picture
This is the third major R&D platform launch in three weeks built on the same idea: put the record of an experiment, the data and the workflow in one place. Benchling launched Science Foundries in mid-October and Revvity Signals followed with LabGistics. Genedata, long known for analytics and screening software, is now pushing into the notebook and LIMS layer that those vendors and others already sell into.
For buyers, that means more choice and more overlap. Large biopharma R&D organisations often run several of these systems side by side, and each vendor now wants to be the one that holds the full record. Owning that record looks increasingly important as companies try to put AI on top of their R&D data.
What it means for hiring
- Moving from analytics into ELN and LIMS means competing for replacement deals against incumbents. We'd expect demand for enterprise AEs and solution consultants who have sold notebooks or LIMS into biologics R&D.
- Integrated platforms like this are only as good as their configuration. Implementation consultants and scientific CS people who understand biologics workflows and CRO or CDMO hand-offs look like the scarce profile.
- With several vendors now making near-identical platform claims, product marketers who can explain the difference to scientists in plain terms become more valuable.
