The Fenix Group hires a CTO to pull R&D together across seven coatings brands

A mid-market specialty coatings group has created a single technical lead over four US plants and a stable of acquired brands. It is a small appointment with a familiar pattern: once R&D is centralised, formulation data and tools usually follow.

The Fenix Group, a US maker of specialty industrial and concrete coatings, has appointed Brian Turner as chief technology officer, European Coatings reported on 28 October. Turner will be responsible for bringing research and development together across the company's four US manufacturing sites, with a brief covering product development, technical consistency and innovation.

Who he is

Turner has close to 30 years in coatings and construction materials, according to the report, with a background in innovation management and product development. He holds a chemistry degree from Pennsylvania State University and is Six Sigma certified. The report does not name his previous employers.

What Fenix is building

Fenix sells to mid-market equipment makers and contractors through a set of brands: Burke, Concrete Coatings, National Coatings, Sierra, SureCrete, TCI Coatings and TK Products. Its plants are in Minnetonka, Minnesota; Galesburg, Illinois; Dade City, Florida; and Lubbock, Texas. The company says the new role supports its plan to coordinate technical capabilities across that specialty coatings portfolio.

That is the key detail. A group made up of several brands, each with its own history, lab habits and product formulas, is now putting one person in charge of how R&D works across all of them. The job title is a CTO, but the work described is integration.

The bigger picture in coatings

Fenix is not alone in reshaping its coatings business. Henkel completed its €2.1 billion purchase of Stahl on 1 October, adding a Dutch specialty coatings company with about 1,800 employees. Days later, AkzoNobel agreed to sell its South East Asian decorative paints business to Nippon Paint for an enterprise value of about $1.35 billion. Buying, selling and combining brands has been a steady theme across the sector this year.

Technical leadership is moving too. Chemical Week's latest people column lists Raj Krishnaswamy as the new chief technology officer of polymer compounder Teknor Apex.

Why it matters for R&D software

For vendors selling formulation management, ELNs for chemists or R&D data platforms, an appointment like this is a buying signal. A newly appointed technical head with a mandate for consistency across several brands and sites tends to look hard at how formulas, test results and raw-material data are stored and shared. Mid-market coatings groups are rarely the first logos on a materials informatics vendor's slide, but there are a lot of them, and many are built through acquisition.

What it means for hiring

  • In our view, newly appointed CTOs at multi-brand formulators are among the best-qualified leads in this market. Vendors need business development people who track these moves and reach out early, before a tool review is under way.
  • Mid-market chemical buyers want a partner who understands coatings chemistry, not a generic SaaS pitch. Solution consultants with formulation or lab backgrounds will win more of these deals.
  • Integration-led deployments are slow and hands-on. Implementation and customer success teams that can harmonise data from several legacy labs are a real differentiator.
