Xylem trims its 2026 outlook and plans two sales plus a segment shake-up

Orders grew strongly but revenue stalled in the third quarter, so Xylem cut full-year guidance and set out a plan to sell two businesses and move to three segments from January. For anyone selling pumps, meters or treatment kit, it is a clear read on where one of the sector's biggest suppliers wants to focus.

Xylem published its third-quarter 2026 results on 27 October, alongside what it called strategic actions to accelerate growth. The headline was a split picture: orders rose, revenue did not, and the company lowered its numbers for the year.

The numbers

Orders came in at $2.3 billion, up 7% on a reported basis and 10% organically. Revenue was $2.2 billion, 3% lower as reported and flat organically. The company put the revenue softness down to project timing and more cautious spending decisions by customers.

Profitability still improved. Adjusted EBITDA margin rose 70 basis points to 23.9%, helped by productivity savings and price, and adjusted EPS was $1.44, up 5%. According to 24/7 Wall St., that was a cent short of consensus and revenue was below the $2.28 billion analysts expected, ending a run of five straight quarterly beats.

The segment detail matters most for the waterworks channel. Water Infrastructure revenue was $645 million, down 2% as reported and 1% organically, with orders of $675 million also down 1% organically. Measurement and Control Solutions saw revenue fall 16% as reported to $436 million, with divestitures behind much of that drop; organically it was down 5%. Its orders were the bright spot of the quarter, up 30% organically to $504 million.

Elsewhere, Applied Water revenue grew 9% organically to $489 million, while Water Solutions and Services revenue slipped 2% organically to $631 million even as its orders rose 6%.

The guidance cut

Full-year revenue is now expected at about $8.95 billion, flat organically, against previous guidance of 2% to 3% organic growth. Adjusted EPS guidance moved down to $5.40 to $5.45, from $5.55 to $5.70.

The strategic actions

Xylem said it intends to divest Applied Water International and Specialty Flow Control. It gave no timing or price. From 1 January 2027 it will run three segments instead of four: Treatment and Services, led by Rodney Aulick; Flow Solutions, led by Joe Johnston; and Measurement and Analytics, led by Meredith Emmerich. It also plans to put more money into faster-growing verticals including data centres and microelectronics.

President and CEO Matthew Pine said the company is "moving with urgency to shape Xylem around the markets where our capabilities can deliver the greatest customer value".

The bigger picture

Strong orders alongside falling revenue in measurement fits the pattern Badger Meter described a week earlier: utilities are committing to projects but taking longer to release them. For distributors and rep agencies, a supplier reorganising its sales structure around three new segments usually means changes to territories, product groupings and who owns which accounts in 2027.

What it means for hiring

  • In our view, segment realignments like this tend to reshuffle commercial leadership and channel management roles. Distributors and reps working with Xylem brands should expect new contacts and possibly new programmes next year.
  • Divestitures create carve-out businesses that often need their own sales, finance and operations leaders, which we see as a source of senior hiring over the coming year.
  • A 30% organic jump in Measurement and Control Solutions orders points to continued demand for project managers and utility-facing account people who can turn awarded AMI work into shipped revenue.
