Illumina lifts 2026 guidance as clinical demand and NovaSeq X placements hold up

The sequencing leader beat its own third-quarter guidance and nudged up its full-year revenue and earnings outlook. Clinical customers, not research budgets, are doing the heavy lifting.

Illumina reported third-quarter revenue of $1,129 million on 29 October, up 4.2% on the same quarter last year, and raised its full-year revenue and earnings guidance. The results release puts the beat down to clinical customers and new NovaSeq X installations.

The numbers

Reported revenue rose from $1,084 million a year earlier. Strip out a one-off adjustment linked to tariff refunds and revenue was $1,166 million, up 7.6%. Organic growth, which removes currency and deal effects, came in at 4.8%.

The tariff point needs a word of explanation. Illumina booked a $79 million benefit in cost of revenue from tariff refunds, but also took $37 million off revenue for the share it expects to pass back to customers as credits. That is why the company quotes most of its numbers on an "excluding tariff refunds" basis this quarter.

Profitability improved sharply on a reported basis. GAAP operating margin was 27.0%, against 21.0% a year earlier, and GAAP diluted earnings per share rose to $1.43 from $0.98. Free cash flow for the quarter was $378 million, and Illumina ended September with $1.34 billion in cash and short-term investments.

What management said

"In the third quarter, healthy clinical demand and robust NovaSeq X placements drove results above our guidance." Jacob Thaysen, CEO, Illumina

Thaysen also tied the company's direction to AI, saying Illumina and its customers are "laying the foundation for AI to transform our understanding of human biology". The release does not name specific AI products, and it does not split revenue between clinical and research customers.

Guidance

Excluding tariff refunds, Illumina now expects 2026 revenue of $4.64 billion to $4.66 billion, up from $4.60 billion to $4.64 billion. Non-GAAP diluted EPS guidance moves to $5.40 to $5.45, from $5.30 to $5.40. Organic growth guidance of more than 4% is unchanged.

China

China weighs on growth far less than earlier in the year. Illumina is on China's Unreliable Entities List, and it reports growth for the rest of the world without Greater China. In the quarter, stripping out China actually trimmed organic growth by 0.1 percentage points, to 4.7%. For the year to date, China has held growth back by 1.2 points: organic growth of 4.2%, against 5.4% for the rest of the world.

The bigger picture

For a business that spent much of the last few years explaining China, tariffs and soft research spending, a quarter where clinical demand carries the numbers is a meaningful shift. High-throughput instruments placed in clinical labs tend to pull through consumables for years, and that pull-through is likely to be the next thing investors look for. Thaysen and CFO Ankur Dhingra were scheduled to take analysts' questions on a call the same afternoon.

What it means for hiring

  • When growth comes from clinical labs rather than academic research, the sought-after profile changes: field application scientists and account managers who understand validated clinical workflows, not just discovery projects.
  • Large instrument placements in clinical settings tend to create follow-on demand for service engineers and consumables-focused account teams. Expect competitors and labs alike to compete for that talent.
  • A raised outlook gives Illumina room to protect commercial headcount going into 2027 budgets, which may make its people harder to move in the near term.
