GSK plans $800M Pennsylvania biologics hub with more than 300 new jobs

GSK is rebuilding its Upper Merion site as a single manufacturing and R&D hub, with construction from 2027. It is one of the clearest signs of where US pharma hiring is heading.

GSK is investing more than $800 million to turn its site in Upper Merion Township, Pennsylvania, into a combined manufacturing and R&D hub. The plan was announced by Governor Josh Shapiro's office on 9 October, Fierce Pharma reported, and is expected to create more than 300 jobs over five years, according to Pharma Manufacturing.

What is being built

Existing buildings will be cleared to make room for new facilities on one site. Plans include a biologics plant for clinical and commercial-scale supply, a co-located R&D pilot plant for process development and technology transfer, a central quality control laboratory, and a manufacturing science and technology hub, all linked by digital systems. Construction is expected to begin in 2027.

"This investment goes well beyond a single manufacturing building," John Jewett, site director, GSK Upper Merion

The jobs

On top of the new roles, the governor's release says the project could help retain about 4,500 existing GSK jobs in Pennsylvania. GSK's US headquarters is in Philadelphia, and the company is also expanding at Marietta, Pennsylvania, where a drug substance facility is due online by the end of 2027 and a drug product facility in 2028.

The bigger picture

Upper Merion is part of a wider US push. In September 2025 GSK committed $30 billion over five years to its US R&D and manufacturing, with $1.2 billion of that set aside for advanced manufacturing, AI and digital technology, including the Upper Merion "flex" factory. GSK is also one of 26 drugmakers to sign a "most favored nation" agreement with the White House, which trades pricing concessions for a period of tariff relief.

The contrast with Europe is worth noting. In the same month, Fierce Pharma reported that up to 1,217 GSK roles in Belgium are at risk as part of the company's cost programme. Large pharma is not shrinking so much as moving where it invests, and US manufacturing is a clear winner.

What it means for hiring

  • Integrated hubs like this need people across MSAT, process development, quality control and digital manufacturing. We expect competition for experienced biologics manufacturing talent around Philadelphia to sharpen as construction approaches.
  • With hiring spread over five years and building work from 2027, early demand is likely to centre on engineering, project, validation and quality leadership before operational teams.
  • US onshoring commitments from large pharma look set to be a steady source of manufacturing hiring, in our view, even while R&D headcount elsewhere is under pressure.
