Healthcare private equity firm InTandem Capital Partners has completed a strategic growth investment in Atlas Health, according to a release issued on 29 October. The size of the investment, the valuation and the stake were not disclosed. Atlas's management team stays in charge and remains a significant shareholder.
What Atlas does
Founded in 2017, Atlas works with hospitals and health systems to find patients who qualify for affordability programmes, such as coverage options and financial assistance, and enrol them. Its agentic AI, called Ava, does much of the matching for patients facing expensive treatment. The pitch to providers is that more patients covered means more reimbursement and less uncompensated care, although the release does not put numbers on either.
"Patient affordability is becoming a category every health system runs on dedicated infrastructure." Ethan Davidoff, Founder and CEO, Atlas Health
The deal
J.P. Morgan was Atlas's exclusive financial adviser and Cooley acted as its legal counsel; Greenberg Traurig advised InTandem. On the InTandem side, president and managing partner Brad Coppens and principal Aaron Newman are quoted. Coppens pointed to regulatory reform, rising employer costs and higher specialty drug prices as reasons coverage is getting harder for patients to secure.
Atlas says it will use the capital to speed up product work and expand its services for providers and patients. RevCycleAI's write-up adds that the plan includes extending the platform to specialty pharmacies, which it notes is a stated plan rather than something already live.
The bigger picture
RevCycleAI frames patient affordability as part of "financial clearance", the front-end revenue cycle work of confirming coverage before care is delivered. It places the Atlas deal alongside Experian Health's acquisition of eInsights in insurance discovery and R1's partnership with Fortuna Health on Medicaid enrollment and renewal. Taken together, the large RCM players and their investors are paying more attention to what happens before a claim exists, not just after it is denied.
For health systems, the appeal is straightforward. Every patient who is matched to coverage or assistance before treatment is one fewer account heading towards bad debt, and one more patient who actually starts the care they were referred for. Expect more capital to follow this part of the revenue cycle as provider margins stay tight.
What it means for hiring
- PE growth capital typically funds a step up in go-to-market. We'd expect Atlas to need enterprise sellers and account directors who already sell to health system revenue cycle and patient financial services leaders.
- Moving into specialty pharmacy is a new buyer. That usually means hiring people with pharmacy services or hub relationships rather than retraining a hospital-focused team.
- Patient advocate and operations leaders who can run a blended AI-plus-human service at scale are a quietly scarce profile in this part of the market.
